They are in good condition for their age, but as to be expected there are some age related marks or very small holes which may be present. The hat is constructed of brown olive drab wool. These were nice corner shelves that were easy to install, and look great. There are plenty of other options on Amazon that offer more shelves and/or at a lower price, but these ones look nicer than most. Overall they're pretty easy to install. It's not exactly a two-person job, but it is easier if you have help - someone to hold the shelf and a level, and the other to mark the holes. My only other recommendation is to check your L-brackets before you do anything. Some come bent inward, some bent outward. If they're really crooked it will make it hard to wedge the shelf into the corner and may result in uneven measurements/holes, so make sure you straighten them out first.
